Victorian 1860's Style Atholl Highlanders Horsehair Sporran
Antique 1860’s Style Atholl Highlanders Horsehair Sporran
The sporran is handcrafted in fine horsehair hair sporran with six short black horse hair tassels. The cantle is a black leather with a Atholl Highlanders two part sporran badge. The tooled back is in black leather and has a classic small back purse.
This sporran pattern is the same style that was worn by the Atholl Highlanders, ghillies, estate workers on the Blair Atholl Castle estate from the 1850-60’s. The inspiration was the watercolour of Willie Duff and Atholl Highlander by Kenneth MacLeay - The Highlanders of Scotland .

A Sporran is a pouch (Scottish Gaelic for ‘purse’). Now a decorative part of Highland dress, it was originally an everyday practical item. Made of leather or fur, it usually has more or less elaborate silver or other ornamentation, especially on the clasp or hanger. It is worn on a chain or belt around the waist, allowing the sporran to lie below the waist of the person wearing a kilt.
